Transfer Students

Transfer admission to the Carlson School is competitive, and we encourage prospective students to start preparing early. Applicants for transfer admission are accepted at both the sophomore and junior level.

March 1 Deadline

Applications are accepted for fall admission only. The application deadline is March 1. An application will be reviewed only if all application materials are postmarked by the March 1 deadline.

Admission Decisions

Admission decisions are sent on a rolling basis, with all candidates receiving a decision no later than June 1.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission, students should meet the following criteria:

NEW! Completion of 26 credits by the end of spring semester 2013
Minimum 3.0 collegiate GPA
Completion of the following three "tool" courses, with a grade of C- or higher:
- Microeconomics (Econ 1101, 1104, or ApEc 1101)
- Macroeconomics (Econ 1102, 1105, or ApEc 1102)
- Calculus (Math 1142 or 1271)

Very strong preference is given to applicants who have completed or will complete all tool courses by the end of spring semester 2013.

Review Factors

Transfer admission is based on a holistic review of the applicant's background and accomplishments as presented in the application materials. Students admitted to the program have an average collegiate GPA of 3.71, strong extracurricular and leadership activities, and exceptional writing skills.

We look at the following items closely during the admissions process:

Academic performance
Progress in tool courses
Leadership, service, work experience and other "outside of the classroom" experiences (as assessed by the application addendum)
Writing skills (as assessed by the personal essay)
High school academic performance and ACT/SAT scores for students looking to transfer at the sophomore level

Junior Level Applicants

Junior-level applicants may also wish to complete the following prior to admission in order to remain on a four-year graduation plan:

Business Statistics (SCO 2550)
Financial Accounting (Acct 2050)
Fundamentals of Management (Mgmt 3001)
Students transferring in at the junior level will be required to take BA 3000 Career Skills the summer prior to enrollment in the program.

PLEASE NOTE: While high school academic performance will not be utilizaed as an admission factor for junior-level applicants, ALL applicants from outside the University of MN must turn in a high school transcript. The high school transcript (or GED) is needed to determine: proof of graduation; whether you have completed the high school preparation requirements; and whether you have met all of the prerequisiites for admission to your college of choice. Exception: students who have previously completed an A.A. degree or bachelor's degree do not need to submit a high school transcript.

Immersion Core

The Immersion Core includes courses in strategy, marketing, finance, and operations and will be taken together as part of a 12-credit cohort taken during one semester.

Students should not complete the following courses prior to transfer:

Finance Fundamentals
Principles of Marketing
Operations Management
Business Strategy

Transferring Credits

The Carlson School's Undergraduate Program works with the University of Minnesota Office of Admissions to determine how credits transfer to meet program requirements after an admission decision has been made. Use the transfer guide to determine how your credits will transfer to meet liberal education requirements and which courses will transfer to meet our specific tool course requirements. We generally review upper division, or major coursework, on a course-by-course basis. Business coursework beyond the "Tool," "Intro to Business" and "Principles of Management" from two-year colleges generally does not transfer.

Minnesota Transfer Curriculum

The Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) will meet the University's liberal education requirements (but not the writing intensive requirements). Consult with a counselor at your current institution with questions regarding the MnTC.
