Kent Clemens, a senior actuary at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Office of the Actuary, will be the featured speaker at the next Medical Industry Leadership Institute Actuarial Seminar Series. He will discuss "Interesting Times for an Actuary: Healthcare Trends and Healthcare Reform" Monday, November 22, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the 3M Auditorium. A reception will follow. Medicaid, Medicare, and total U.S. healthcare spending have received a lot of attention throughout the drive to healthcare reform. The recently passed legislation will bring about change, but where do things stand before the reform begins? What are the expected impacts of the recently passed healthcare reform legislation on Medicaid, Medicare, and total healthcare spending? What role have actuaries played along the way?
As senior actuary, Clemens provides estimates of Medicare spending for the federal budget and the annual Medicare Trustees Report, determines the annual financing rates for Medicare Part B, contributes to the annual projections article on national health spending, and provides analysis of Medicare legislative proposals. He works primarily with Medicare Part B and specializes in the Sustainable Growth Rate system, which determines the annual Medicare physician payment update. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries.
