  • Course Description: Recognizing the mutual benefits to be gained through this co-operative program, the Medical Industry Valuation Laboratory seeks to produce medical innovation valuations for University of Minnesota and State of Minnesota clients for high value economic development and professional training purposes using an interdisciplinary team of faculty, students and industry leaders.
  • Course Objectives: By the completion of this course, students will have acquired the skills to evaluate emerging medical industry innovations. Specifically, the course will provide students with the skill to:
    • Succinctly summarize the nature of new medical industry technology or process design.
    • Utilize the different skill sets of early career professionals in diverse fields to evaluate the technical, business and legal challenges of a prospective product or process.
    • Understand how intellectual property rights for a new medical technology or process are researched for future projection.
    • Use databases to size a potential market with the goal of developing a go or no go recommendation for future product development.
    • Complete a written and verbal effective return on investment analysis of a prospective new medical technology or process.
  • Learning Outcomes: The outcome of this course is for students to learn to succinctly evaluate the value of a new medical industry technology or process by considering market size and potential, intellectual property, and return on investment. In this course, teams of students will complete a rapid production market analysis of promising medical technologies and services to determine potential for success in market. Students will gain exposure to University innovations, venture firms, and inventors. The Laboratory will consist of graduate students from Carlson, CLA, IT, Law, and AHC collegiate units.

MILI Fellows

Since 2009, MILI has successfully run the MILI Fellows Program. Each year 4-6 outstanding MILI students who have completed the Valuation Lab are selected to work with the Medical Devices Center's Innovation Fellows in the College of Science & Engineering. (Specifics about the Innovation Fellows Program).

The Innovation Fellows are charged with the development of new products during their year-long fellowship. The MILI Fellows work side by side with the Innovation Fellows and provide the business case for these new products both in the idea stage to triage likely products and during the development phase of selected products.

The MILI Fellowship does not carry a stipend and requires a year-long commitment starting the beginning of September of each year. The amount of time required of the Fellows varies throughout the year.
