As part of the application, you will need to upload a goals statement and a diversity statement that should also touch on a personal accomplishment. Your application fee must be paid with a credit card. If you wish, you may also submit an optional extenuating circumstances statement. You should also upload a copy of your resume and, if possible, your transcripts. Please also use the Graduate School's online recommendation feature for your letters of recommendation. The Graduate School's application can be saved and continued later.

Please upload your resume in the Graduate School application. Your formatting should be the same as if you are applying for a job.

Unofficial transcripts or academic records should be uploaded directly to the online application. International students should also upload an English translation if the transcript is not in English. Please do not mail in paper copies of your transcripts. There is no need for official transcripts or academic records for initial review.

If you are admitted, the University will then request official copies of this material.

Minimum academic requirements for international applicants are a 4-year bachelor's degree or a master's degree (2 years after your bachelor's degree).

All applicants are required to take either the GRE or GMAT. Scores must be from within the past five years. Average GRE scores for admitted students are 490 verbal and 610 quantitative.

We require three letters of recommendation. Work-related letters are acceptable, but for recent graduates of academic programs, we prefer at least two letters from former professors. Not-so-recent graduates are allowed to substitute work-related recommendations, but should still try to obtain at least one letter of recommendation from a former professor.

The TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS is generally required of all applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of U.S. citizenship status. Applicants who have completed 24 quarter credits/16 semester credits (within 24 months of the applicant's proposed term of entry) in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher learning in the United States or other English-speaking country before entering the University of Minnesota are generally exempted from this requirement.

The minimum score requirements for admission are:

  • Internet-based: 79 (with 21 on the writing section, 19 on the reading section)

• IELTS: 6.5
