Global Connections Made through Education Abroad Class Support Leadership Capstone

In January 2016, Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations senior Adrian Szymonski chose to fulfill his international experience requirement in Chile and Argentina by participating in Accounting 3001: Managerial Accounting - An International Perspective.

In addition to an opportunity to learn about how business is done in the region and to practice his Spanish, Adrian was also looking ahead to a spring capstone course for his leadership minor. He hoped to make some meaningful connections with professionals in those regions that he could draw upon later for his project.

"My Leadership Minor Capstone class is a class in which we look at leadership and the impact it has on a global, multicultural level. One of the major assignments is to connect and talk with three individuals that affiliate with a primary culture outside of my primary culture. I knew about this assignment ahead of time and was able to network with individuals at the site visits while abroad. It was because of this experience that I was able to get to know many human resources (HR) professionals and learn about the differences and similarities among positions in the United States, Argentina, and Chile."

Through visits associated with the class, Adrian was able to meet an HR manager at PWC in Santiago, Chile, and an HR professional who works for Axion Energy outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He interviewed both for his capstone assignment. These subsequent conversations helped him see how leadership and human resources practices vary from country to country.

Wells Fargo Foundation generously contributes financial support for research on cutting-edge business sustainability topics. Carlson School Supply Chain Professor Kingshuk Sinha was awarded funds in 2015 to pursue research on "Sustainable and Responsible Design and Management of Global Supply Chains." Professor Sinha recently shared a working paper that emerged from the research titled "Towards Improving Factory Working Conditions in Developing Countries: An Empirical Analysis of Bangladesh Ready-Made Garment Factories." The abstract summarizes the findings which highlight "the marketplace implications for risk related to working conditions in supplier factories suggest that the competitiveness of a supplier factory in a developing country is inversely related to the level of working condition risks in the factory."

Expanding Experiential Learning Opportunities in Asia

Starting in the summer of 2016, CGI is offering a new, eight-week international internship program with opportunities in Hong Kong and Singapore for undergraduate students!

This program is designed for students seeking a meaningful international internship in order to help improve their professional skills in an international context and be prepared for a more independent experience abroad.

CGI works with an established partner in country to place students in project-based internships with firms in either Hong Kong or Singapore to allow them to see a project from the beginning to the end.

At the same time, the students are enrolled in a one-credit course. The learning objectives for the course focus on personal and professional development in an international context. The course builds in assignments that create space for the students to reflect on their work experiences and the cultural interactions that they are having in country as they are happening.

Education Abroad Inspires New Business Venture

Studying abroad has myriad positive impacts on individuals. It increases one's ability to navigate ambiguous situations, enhances creativity, and increases independence and self-reliance, among other benefits. These same attributes lend themselves to entrepreneurial endeavors.

Undergraduate student and entrepreneurial studies major Laura Hyypio credits her semester abroad with inspiring her to start a healthy dessert company with six other undergraduate students.

"While abroad in Copenhagen, I found myself on a continual journey of self-growth and I loved it. On top of living abroad by myself for a semester, I wanted to see what else I was capable of achieving. As a result, I ate a raw, vegan lifestyle for one and a half months and I felt like a new person. My mind was clearer, I lived with more energy, and I radiated a level of happiness I never knew existed.  Thankfully, there were raw vegan cafes in Copenhagen, as well as shops that sold foods conducive to my lifestyle (the best part being that they even sold delicious desserts).

Upon arriving home in the United States, I couldn't wait to share what I had learned from this lifestyle with my family and friends. I wanted everyone to experience the happiness that I felt when I loved my body! Unfortunately, it was much harder to share this lifestyle with others because there were few to no options in grocery stores...besides fruit...but I wasn't willing to settle for this gap in the market. I desperately wanted to share the benefits with others and I knew the best way to do that would be through desserts.

Thankfully, in my continued efforts to be a better person every day, I had the opportunity to join Entrepreneurship in Action. This class allowed me to share my passion with my classmates and pitch my startup idea of minimally processed, wholesome desserts."

Their firm is called 6 (their products are made with just six wholesome ingredients) and their offerings can be purchased at coffee shops and natural foods stores in Minneapolis. They are currently working on getting their products on the shelves of local grocery stores.

The "Biz Abroad Slam" is structured as a fast-paced, fun way for Carlson School students who have  CGIPhoto4completed their international  experience to share highlights and inspire future students.  After launching as a stand-alone event in 2015, the Biz Abroad Slam returned as part of B-week, a week-long series of events highlighting careers in business. The event this year also featured a recruiter from the Minnesota multinational Ecolab as emcee. Ten Carlson School students were each given two minutes to pitch their program to a crowd of hundreds of students.
