Lee Fleming of the University of California, Berkeley, will discuss “Non-Competes and Brain Drain: Evidence from a Natural Experiment” on Tuesday, February 12, from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. in 1-136 Carlson School.
Fleming constructed inventor career histories using the U.S. patent record from 1975 to 2005 and will demonstrate a brain drain among patenting inventors from states that enforce employee non-compete agreements to those that do not. Non-compete enforcement appears to drive away inventors with greater human and social capital. Moreover, non-competes lead to greater out-of-state knowledge diffusion.
This seminar is sponsored by the Department of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship.
