This is a semester exchange program, where students take classes (in English or Spanish) directly at a partner university and substitute that semester for a semester at the University of Minnesota. The partner university will send one of their students to the Carlson School of Management to take classes in their place.

Exchanges often require students to demonstrate a high degree of independence, adaptability, and flexibility because support and service may be different from a US university. Examples of differences that exchange students should be prepared to encounter include varying housing options, the amount and timing of program details, grading based less on assignments and more on final exams, and an academic calendar that may differ significantly from the University of Minnesota.

Barcelona faces the Mediterranean Sea from the Iberian Peninsula, with a majestic range of mountains forming a scenic background. The city is host to a number of museums, parks, and design fairs. Some of the primary sectors of the service economy are logistics and telecommunications. The social scene and pleasant climate have made Barcelona an international hub of business networks, holiday seekers, and students interested in soaking in the rich culture of Catalonia.

The Escuela Superior de Adminstración y Dirección de Empresas (ESADE) located Sant Cugat, a 45 minute train ride from the center of Barcelona. ESADE is annually ranked as one of the finest international MBA programs in the world. Among the most competitive international programs offered at the Carlson School, potential students should begin planning early to apply.

ESADE is an institution founded with a clear aim: to adopt a humanistic approach in the training of critical professionals capable of coping with a changing world. The challenging curriculum at ESADE focuses on preparing managers for an increasingly complex international business environment with an emphasis on teamwork and a global approach to problem solving. The school reflects this mission through consistently training leaders that add value to their companies.

When selecting a semester exchange program, students should take note of academic calendars that differ significantly from the University of Minnesota. Consider potential conflicts such as holidays, family events, graduation ceremonies, and summer jobs/internships early in the selection process.

Work with Education Abroad Advisers and the Carlson Business Career Center for support addressing challenges.

Students are enrolled in 15 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5100) credits for their semester at ESADE and take a total of 24 ECTS credits at ESADE to meet minimum requirements.

Carlson School undergraduate students with at least 90 credits (at the time of study abroad) can enroll in Masters of Science of Management courses at ESADE. As ESADE students in this program are blending undergraduate and graduate courses, advanced understanding of core business topics is a requirement of the program. A sample of course topics include:

Language skills are not required but are helpful to widen course offerings. ESADE offers an intensive 2-week Spanish crash course prior to orientation which is highly recommended.

Limited student housing on campus in Sant Cugat is available but most students choose to make their own housing arrangements in Barcelona. ESADE provides a list of hotels and hostels, but recommends waiting until arrival in Barcelona. One resource is the University’s boards and Intranet; many Spanish students are going on an exchange themselves and will rent their apartments.

To be eligible for this education abroad program, you must be:

• A University of Minnesota student who has successfully completed the I-Core curriculum or equivalent coursework
• In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.5
• Additional criteria may apply

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Submit a completed application by the February 28th priority deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee, and selection notifications are sent out within one month of the priority deadline or receipt of application during rolling admission. Once selected, students are given the opportunity to confirm acceptance, at which point they are subject to Education Abroad policies.
