This is a semester exchange program, where students take classes (in English) directly at a partner university and substitute that semester for a semester at the University of Minnesota. The partner university will send one of their students to the Carlson School of Management to take classes in their place.

Exchanges often require students to demonstrate a high degree of independence, adaptability, and flexibility because support and service may be different from a US university. Examples of differences that exchange students should be prepared to encounter include varying housing options, the amount and timing of program details, grading based less on assignments and more on final exams, and an academic calendar that may differ significantly from the University of Minnesota.

Singapore Management University (SMU) was incorporated in January, 2000 and has quickly surged to become the country's third largest university. SMU delivers world-class curriculum and faculty committed to advancing knowledge in international business. The university recently opened its permanent state-of-the-art campus in the heart of the city.

Studying for a semester at Singapore Management University (SMU) opens doors for students who want to achieve success in the evolving markets of Asia. Singapore recently joined the upper echelons of U.S. trading partners. SMU is primed to nurture of diverse and relevant talents in a global economy.

Singapore is an island city-state on the southern tip of the Malay peninsula, and officially recognizes 4 distinct languages with a dozen more spoken on the streets daily. Strategically located in a vibrant cultural and economic region, the country is connected by bridge to Malaysia, is a short ferry trip from Indonesia, and short flights to Thailand and Vietnam are regularly run at phenomenal discounts. Along with the unique cultural cuisines in Chinatown, Little India, and the Arab Quarter, Singapore has historically significant sites like Changi Prison, the height of fashion found along Orchard Road, serene tropical gardens, and sleek, towering skyscrapers in the modern city center.

When selecting a semester exchange program, students should take note of academic calendars that differ significantly from the University of Minnesota. Consider potential conflicts such as holidays, family events, graduation ceremonies, and summer jobs/internships early in the selection process.

Work with Education Abroad Advisers and the Carlson Business Career Center for support addressing challenges.

Students are enrolled in 16 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5100) credits for a semester at the Singapore Management University and take four full classes at SMU to meet minimum requirements.

Courses at SMU are offered in English and cover a variety of core and specialized topics. The classes provide Carlson School exchange students with many applicable class options to enhance their degree and understanding of business in Asia. Courses are available in the areas of:

• Finance
• Information Systems
• Marketing
• Organizational Behavior & Human Resources
• Operations Management

SMU does not arrange for student housing but provides resources to assist students including access to SMU student groups. The majority of exchange students stay together in a hostel upon arrival while they visit a variety of housing options before making a decision, then rent an apartment with other international exchange students.

To be eligible for this education abroad program, you must be:

• A University of Minnesota student who has successfully completed the I-Core curriculum or equivalent coursework
• In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0
• Additional criteria may apply and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Submit a completed application by the February 28th priority deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee, and selection notifications are sent out within one month of the priority deadline or receipt of application during rolling admission. Once selected, students are given the opportunity to confirm acceptance, at which point they are subject to Education Abroad policies
