This is a semester exchange program, where students take classes directly at a partner university and substitute that semester for a semester at the University of Minnesota. The partner university will send one of their students to the Carlson School of Management to take classes in their place.

Exchanges often require students to demonstrate a high degree of independence, adaptability, and flexibility because support and service may be different from a US university. Examples of differences that exchange students should be prepared to encounter include varying housing options, the amount and timing of program details, grading based less on assignments and more on final exams, and an academic calendar that may differ significantly from the University of Minnesota.

Located in a natural harbor on the southeastern coast of New Zealand, the city of Dunedin is a university town. Dunedin is the main city in the province of Otago and has a total population of 120,000 people. Otago peninsula is a visual treat, indented on the ocean side by high, surf-beaten bluffs and beaches with seals and sea birds. Inland, the city rises up to volcanic hills that stretch to one of New Zealand's mountain ranges.

The University of Otago is New Zealand's oldest university. Its business program has an international focus and offers a wide range of courses in accounting, business law, finance, economics, information science, and marketing, as well as a special tourism program. A great deal of emphasis is placed on the collaboration, communication and peer management processes of business management. Exchange students are able to select from a variety of courses at the undergraduate level.

When selecting a semester exchange program, students should take note of academic calendars that differ significantly from the University of Minnesota. Consider potential conflicts such as holidays, family events, graduation ceremonies, and summer jobs/internships early in the selection process.

Work with Education Abroad Advisers and the Carlson Business Career Center for support addressing challenges.

Students are enrolled in 14 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5100) credits for a semester at Otago and take a total of three classes (known as "papers") to earn 54 Otago points and meet minimum requirements.

Courses vary each semester. Past topics have included:

Classes are a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, assignments and readings and students are advised to take no more than 90 points (five classes) per semester. Exchange students typically take a combination of business and non-business courses. All classes are in English.

Accommodation is guaranteed to exchange students who apply by the deadline for their term of study. Students also have the option of either finding their own accommodation. The most common style of living is student flats with four or five students, where each student has a private bedroom and all students share kitchen, living and bathroom areas. Where possible, study abroad students are placed in flats with a mix of New Zealand students and overseas students.

To be eligible for this education abroad program, you must be:

• A University of Minnesota student who has successfully completed the I-Core curriculum or equivalent coursework
• In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0
• Additional criteria may apply and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admittance

Submit a completed application by the February 28th priority deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee, and selection notifications are sent out within one month of the priority deadline or receipt of application during rolling admission. Once selected, students are given the opportunity to confirm acceptance, at which point they are subject to Education Abroad policies
