This is a semester exchange program, where students take classes (in English or French) directly at a partner university and substitute that semester for a semester at the University of Minnesota. The partner university will send one of their students to the Carlson School of Management to take classes in their place.

Exchanges often require students to demonstrate a high degree of independence, adaptability, and flexibility because support and service may be different from a US university. Examples of differences that exchange students should be prepared to encounter include varying housing options, the amount and timing of program details, grading based less on assignments and more on final exams, and an academic calendar that may differ significantly from the University of Minnesota.

Lyon the second largest city of France with more than 1.5 million inhabitants. After Julius Caesar invaded and conquered Gaul (modern day France) more than 2,000 years ago, he set up his capital in Lyon.

During the Middle Ages, Lyon was established as an important crossroads for European traders. Home to Roman ruins, museums, coffee shops, opera, and great shopping, the city proudly proclaims to have some of the best cuisine in France. There are limitless opportunities to engage in French culture while being mere hours from Geneva, London, Paris, the Swiss Alps, or the Mediterranean Sea.

Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 is ranked among the 10 best in France. With six faculties working with students from Lyon's global network of more than 180 partners, international business is simulated in the classroom from the moment the syllabus is handed out. Carlson students are exposed to expert instructors and courses focused on relevant business issues facing managers and leaders every day.

The university enrolls more than 22,000 students, with approximately 5,000 of those enrolled in business degree programs. There are more than 800 international students at Lyon 3 each year. The Carlson School's partnership with Lyon 3 is deep and bridges many shared institutional interests.

When selecting a semester exchange program, students should take note of academic calendars that differ significantly from the University of Minnesota. Consider potential conflicts such as holidays, family events, graduation ceremonies, and summer jobs/internships early in the selection process.

Work with Education Abroad Advisers and the Carlson Business Career Center for support addressing challenges.

Students are enrolled in 15 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5100) credits for their semester at Lyon 3 and take a total of 30 ECTS credits (5 courses) at Lyon 3 to meet minimum requirements.

Carlson School students at the Lyon 3 will enroll in the Study in English in Lyon, France (SELF) program. Students enroll in a mandatory French language and culture course and select 4 additional business subjects. The focus of the program is to improve French language abilities while also building knowledge of international business topics through comparative analysis. Students will take a proficiency test at the Carlson School before departure to determine which French course best suits their ability. The ability to speak French is not a requirement but part of the program's focus on skill-building. Sample elective subjects include:

Students with advanced French language skills may choose to take business courses in French through the DEUF program.

The International Relations Department at Lyon will assist exchange students in finding housing in either private student residencies or with host families. Students will work with the housing coordinator and apply through that office.

To be eligible for this education abroad program, you must be:

• A University of Minnesota student who has successfully completed the I-Core curriculum or equivalent coursework
• In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0
• Additional criteria may apply

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Submit a completed application by the February 28th priority deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee, and selection notifications are sent out within one month of the priority deadline or receipt of application during rolling admission. Once selected, students are given the opportunity to confirm acceptance, at which point they are subject to Education Abroad policies.
